Assessing Climate impacts on the Quantity and quality of WAter

We are happy to invite you to participate in a major science conference that will take place from 13-17 August 2012 in Singapore. The meeting is jointly organized by the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society and the American Geophysical Union. In particular, We draw your attention to Session AS27 (Atmospheric/Climate Sciences) entitled "Climate impacts on mountain water resources influenced by snow and ice". This session is inspired in particular by the ongoing work of the European ACQWA Project coordinated by the University of Geneva and, indeed, it is in the mandate of this project to convene events at major international meetings.

The Singapore event will provide a unique opportunity to exchange with scientists from many Asian regions confronted with problems similar to those addressed by the ACQWA project, particularly the Himalayan region, but also AGU scientists from the Americas where water issues are also of high concern.

Papers from the physical, economic and policy domains pertaining to changing water resources are welcome. Please note that the deadlines for the meeting are the following:

- March 12, 2012: Deadline for Abstract submissions

- April 9, 2012: Notification of acceptance

- June 4, 2012: Author registration for the conference

Future shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns, and changes in the behavior of snow and ice in many mountain regions       will change the quantity, seasonality, and possibly also the quality of water originating in mountains and uplands. As a result, changing water availability will affect both upland and populated lowland areas. Economic sectors such as agriculture, tourism or hydropower may enter into rivalries if water is no longer available in sufficient quantities or at the right time of the year. The challenge is thus to estimate as accurately as possible future changes in order to prepare the way for appropriate adaptation strategies and improved water governance.

This session encourages papers on modelling approaches to enable accurate projections of changes in the seasonality and quantity of runoff in river basins in mountain regions where snow and ice are a key component of the hydrologic cycle, such as the Himalayas, the Andes, the Rockies, or the European Alps. Furthermore, papers that identify key environmental and economic impacts , including the possible compounded effect of changing frequencies and intensities of extreme events, are welcome. Finally, those contributions that propose a portfolio of possible water governance strategies to alleviate future problems of water allocation and use would be part of the overall content of this session.

Submissions will be judged on relevance to conference themes, clarity of thought, data/documented results, creativity, fit in conference program and other criteria. Deadline for notification of acceptance is 30 th August 2012. Contributions from a broad spectrum of sustainable watershed management issues are welcome.

6th World Water Forum

Every three year since 1997, the World Water Forum mobilizes creativity, innovation, competence and know-how in favour of water. 

The Forum must be perceived first of all as a tri-annual process initiated as soon as a host country and a host city have been selected by a series of preparatory processes which combine thematic, regional and political activities. These processes mobilise thousands of water stakeholders over the 5 continents and culminate in the Forum week. However this week is not an end: it represents simply an important milestone in a continuous process combining dialogue, action and monitoring of the results.
